Choose my plate
A simple and effective approach to nutrition balance is the “Choose My Plate” method, developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). This method provides an easy way to organize our meals, emphasizing the correct proportion of different food groups.
The basic idea of the plate method is to divide the plate into four sections, with each section representing a different food group:
1. Vegetables: Vegetables take approximately a little more than ¼ of the plate and include a variety of colorful, nutritious foods. They are rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and are essential for good health.
2. Fruits: Fruits also take up approximately a little les than ¼ of the plate. Like vegetables, they are rich in vitamins and antioxidants, offering natural sweetness and nutrients.
3.Proteins: Protein takes up ¼ of the plate and can include lean meats, fish, eggs, legumes, or plant-based sources such as tofu and nuts. Protein is necessary for tissue growth and maintenance.
4. Grains: Grains, ideally whole grains, cover the remaining ¼ of the plate. They provide energy and fiber, which contribute to health and proper digestion.
Additionally, it is recommended to accompany meals with low-fat dairy products or plant-based calcium alternatives, such as almond or soy milk. The plate method promotes balance and variety in the diet, helping us to receive all the essential nutrients in the right amounts, contributing to our overall health.
